What portability actually costs

Sealing an instrument against water and dust means a smaller display, fewer connections and a battery. In exchange it survives rain, a boat, a treatment plant walkway and being dropped into what it is measuring — which is where the majority of portable meters end their lives.

Measure where the sample is

Several parameters change from the moment a sample leaves the water: chlorine decays, dissolved oxygen equilibrates with the air, carbon dioxide escapes and pH follows it, and temperature is gone immediately. A bottle carried back to a bench does not hold those numbers, so a portable instrument is not a convenience for them — it is the only way to measure them at all.

Practical note

Carry spare batteries and fresh calibration standards in the case; a portable meter far from the laboratory is worth exactly as much as its last calibration.
