This Hanna Instruments calibration solution measures the three standard buffers that cover routine pH work.
A pH electrode's output changes as it ages, so a meter is only as good as its last calibration. Buffers are the reference the whole measurement rests on, which makes them the least sensible place to economise. Three points let the meter check the electrode's linearity as well as its slope, which is what reveals an electrode that is failing rather than merely drifting.
A standard is only a standard while it is uncontaminated and in date. Pour what you need into a clean beaker, never dip an electrode into the bottle, and never return what you poured. Cap the bottle immediately — several of these solutions change value simply by standing open.
Write the opening date on the label. An expired or contaminated standard does not announce itself; it quietly calibrates every instrument in the laboratory to the wrong value.
Calibrate at the temperature you will measure at; buffer values themselves shift with temperature and the meter can only correct what it knows.
