This Hanna Instruments calibration solution measures a pH 13.00 buffer for calibrating in the strongly alkaline range.
A pH electrode's output changes as it ages, so a meter is only as good as its last calibration. Buffers are the reference the whole measurement rests on, which makes them the least sensible place to economise. High-pH buffers also absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which lowers their value: a bottle left open is no longer the standard printed on the label.
A standard is only a standard while it is uncontaminated and in date. Pour what you need into a clean beaker, never dip an electrode into the bottle, and never return what you poured. Cap the bottle immediately — several of these solutions change value simply by standing open.
Write the opening date on the label. An expired or contaminated standard does not announce itself; it quietly calibrates every instrument in the laboratory to the wrong value.
Keep the bottle closed between pours and use small sachets where the buffer is needed only occasionally.
