This Hanna Instruments calibration solution measures a pH 1.68 buffer for calibrating in the strongly acid range.
A pH electrode's output changes as it ages, so a meter is only as good as its last calibration. Buffers are the reference the whole measurement rests on, which makes them the least sensible place to economise. A meter calibrated only at pH 4 and 7 is extrapolating below pH 4, and extrapolation is where electrodes disagree most.
A standard is only a standard while it is uncontaminated and in date. Pour what you need into a clean beaker, never dip an electrode into the bottle, and never return what you poured. Cap the bottle immediately — several of these solutions change value simply by standing open.
Write the opening date on the label. An expired or contaminated standard does not announce itself; it quietly calibrates every instrument in the laboratory to the wrong value.
Never pour used buffer back into the bottle; one contaminated return ruins the whole container.
