Grease and Fats Alkaline Cleaning Solution

This Hanna Instruments calibration solution measures an alkaline cleaner for electrodes fouled with grease and fat.

Why it is measured

An electrode used in food work builds an invisible fat film over its junction, and the symptom is a slow, drifting response that looks like a dying electrode. Cleaning usually brings it back; replacing it costs many times more.

Handling and shelf life

A standard is only a standard while it is uncontaminated and in date. Pour what you need into a clean beaker, never dip an electrode into the bottle, and never return what you poured. Cap the bottle immediately — several of these solutions change value simply by standing open.

Write the opening date on the label. An expired or contaminated standard does not announce itself; it quietly calibrates every instrument in the laboratory to the wrong value.

Practical note

Rinse thoroughly and re-condition in storage solution afterwards; cleaner left on the junction is itself a source of drift.
