Hanna Instruments portable meter for soil pH measured in the ground rather than in a slurry, one model.
HI99121
This Hanna Instruments portable meter measures soil pH measured in the ground rather than in a slurry.
The standard method — mixing soil with water and measuring the slurry — changes the very chemistry it is measuring and cannot be done in a field. A probe with a conical tip and a reinforced body reads the soil where it is, which is where the crop is.
An electrochemical meter is three things that fail separately: the electrode, which ages and eventually dies; the meter, which rarely goes wrong; and the calibration, which is only as recent as the last time somebody did it. Almost every bad reading traces to the first or the third.
Budget for electrodes as consumables, store them wet in storage solution rather than water, and calibrate against fresh buffers at the temperature you will measure at.
Moisten dry soil before inserting the probe and take several readings across a plot; soil pH varies more within a field than between fields.
Supplied as one model.
